I showed my FH the Elm Grove Women's Club, my ceremony and reception venue in one, and he hated it! :(  I didn't expect him to totally hate it... he said "Yea, that's not happening."  Why? Because it's too "womanly", because it's a women's club and it has pink-ish walls.  Come on. Can't wait to tell his mom, who loved it, that he hates it.  I don't know what we're going to do now.  At least it opened up the conversation about ceremony and reception locations... I told him "well now I don't know what to do about a ceremony location, because I REALLY don't want to look at churches."  He said fine, he'll find a church.  I said "Really?  Okay, but your church choice has to pass my aesthetic approval, just like the women's club had to pass yours."  He said he had a church he wanted to visit, the Unitarian Universalist church in Wauwatosa, and that we could even go there some time soon to check it out.  I said okay, let's go tomorrow (Sunday at the time).  He was open to it, but then we just didn't wake up.

Now I don't even know.  I'm back to square ZERO.  So sad, because to me that place was perfect, and the price couldn't be beat!

1.  Get married in a park?
a. No, too cold/wet/windy/hot, plus there are bugs and that could RUIN the whole thing.  (I really hate bugs, even lady bugs, that fly around and land on you).
b. You have to rent everything, which adds up
c. Difficult for everyone to park nearby

2. Get married in some church
a. Fine, except it must pass my beauty test
b. Membership must not be a requirement
c. Cost must not exceed $600 total for the officiant's services and any wedding prep classes that they require
d. Issues w/ my mom demanding a Lutheran church wedding by a Lutheran minister
e. FH has been a church-o-phobe the whole time I've known him
f. I don't know how to stand up to both FH and his mother AND my mother: I don't necessarily want Lutheran OR UU church.

3. What the heck am I going to do about a reception, and will it be affordable?

Hi. :)

I'm newish to Dreamwidth and didn't want to bore my friends with too much wedding talk. I'm 23, British, getting married next year on August 6th. Wanted to share ideas (particularly how to not let the budget get out of control, and DIY stuff) and bounce suggestions off other marrying folk. Hope we'll be able to help each other.
I realize I'm the only one in here so far, but just in case other people manage to find this....

I'm posting a link I saw on another community to a really great example of how to save some money and still have a BEAUTIFUL wedding: Life of Lacey

She has some really great ideas and suggestions on there for centerpieces, invitations, bouquets, and so much more.

I've created this community because it seems like there is nothing out there on DW that fits this niche yet!

I'm a 22 year old bride-to-be (hopefully someday) in the US facing some unique challenges. My family is also celebrating the upcoming marriage of my older sister in 7 months, and they have never been super-fans of my fiance. My friends are far away and are still in university, which makes my suddenly-grown-up life (out of college, working 9-5, engaged and living together) hard for them to relate to. To top it off, my husband-to-be has been struggling with unemployment, a cancer diagnosis, and family trouble of his own, so the LAST thing on his mind is wedding planning.

I, on the other hand, can't seem to think of anything else. Since I feel like I have no one to turn to in real life, I'm hoping that I can help others who feel the same by creating an online forum for discussion of wedding-related stress, excitement, fears, and fun.

"Why not just participate in the Wedding Bee, Brides.com, TheKnot.com, or other wedding site boards?", you may ask. I am a member of TheKnot.com and Brides.com, but I find that those sites are almost overcrowded, and any board posts get lost in a sea of conversations. On top of this, I find their posting format hard to work with, and conversations hard to track.

I'm hoping that this community can be the answer to my current need, and hopefully the needs of others, to have a listening ear and someone to share my excitement as I plan this wedding on my own.
